The rolls that build density: from the single stroke to the seventeen stroke roll.
- Single stroke roll RLRL nonstop: pure alternation, every hit equal to the next. Simple to understand, hard to keep even.
- Double stroke roll Two per hand: the first with a push, the second riding the rebound. The base of every roll.
- Triple stroke roll Three per hand, in sextuplets: RRRLLL. The bridge between the double and the buzz.
- Buzz roll (press roll) Press the stick into the head and let it buzz: each eighth note is one press, alternating hands.
- Five stroke roll Two doubles and one accent: RRLL R. The most used closed roll; the repeat starts from the left.
- Seven stroke roll A sextuplet of doubles and the accent on the next beat: RRLLRR L. Then flipped: LLRRLL R.
- Nine stroke roll Four doubles and the accent on beat 3: RRLLRRLL R. Two beats of roll, one of arrival.
- Ten stroke roll Four doubles and TWO back-to-back accents: RRLLRRLL R L. The double ending is the ten stroke signature.
- Eleven stroke roll Five doubles and the accent: RRLLRRLLRR L, landing on the "and" of 3.
- Thirteen stroke roll Six doubles filling three beats and the accent on 4: RRLLRRLLRRLL R.
- Fifteen stroke roll Seven doubles and the accent on the "and" of 4: the roll nearly fills the bar.
- Seventeen stroke roll Eight doubles fill the first bar; the accent resolves on beat 1 of the second. The full breath.
The paradiddle family: the double that flips the leading hand.
- Single paradiddle RLRR LRLL with the accent on the first note: the double at the end flips the leading hand. The rudiment that opens up the whole kit.
- Double paradiddle RLRLRR LRLRLL in sextuplets: four singles before the double, accent on the first of each six.
- Triple paradiddle RLRLRLRR LRLRLRLL: six singles then the double. Each half of the bar has one hand leading.
- Paradiddle-diddle RLRRLL: single, single, double, double. It does NOT alternate: the right always leads. Perfect in sextuplets.
- Inverted paradiddle RLLR LRRL: the double moves to the MIDDLE of the group. Same material, different placement, different sway.
- Delayed paradiddle RRLR LLRL: the double comes right at the start and the singles arrive after. The accent stays on the beat.
- Reverse paradiddle The paradiddle back to front: LLRL RRLR, with the accent moving to the LAST note of the group.
The thickened note: stick-height control, from the flam to the pataflafla.
- Flam The little note lands softly just before the main one, with the other hand. One thickened note per beat, alternating.
- Flam tap A flam then one more with the SAME hand: lR R, rL L. Every double starts thickened.
- Flam accent Triplets with a flam on the first note: lR L R, rL R L. The triplet classic, alternating the flam hand.
- Swiss army triplet lR R L: flam, the same hand again, then the other. It never flips, which is why it flows faster than the flam accent.
- Flamacue Four notes and the landing: flams on the first and on the next beat, but the ACCENT is on the second note. It fools the ear.
- Flam paradiddle The paradiddle with a flam on the first note: lR L R R, rL R L L. Also called the flamadiddle.
- Pataflafla Flams on the first and fourth of each group: pa-ta-FLA-FLA. Two flams back to back, one on each hand.
- Inverted flam tap The flam tap displaced: the doubles remain, but the flam falls on the SECOND note of each double. R LL RR LL...
The dragged ornaments: two little notes before the main one, from the ruff to the ratamacue.
- Drag (ruff) Two little dragged notes before the main one, bounced by the other hand: llR ... rrL. The flam with two ornaments.
- Single drag tap Drag then an accented answer: llR L, rrL R. The drag pushes the accent onto the next note.
- Double drag tap Two drags in a row then the answer: llR llR L. Twice the drag before the accent.
- Lesson 25 Drag, note, note: llR L R, accent on the last. The name comes from the old rudiment lesson book.
- Single ratamacue A drag then three notes running into the accent: llR L R L. "Ra-ta-ma-cue" is the sound of the shape itself.
- Double ratamacue One extra drag up front: llR, then the full ratamacue right after. The run gets longer.
- Triple ratamacue Three drags lined up before the run: llR llR llR L R L. The full-breath ratamacue.
- Drag paradiddle #1 One accented note then the paradiddle with a drag on its first note: R llR L R R.
- Drag paradiddle #2 Two accented notes then the paradiddle, with drags on the second and on the first of the group: R llR llR L R R.
